At the graduate level, the Master of Arts is conferred in Geography, while the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees are offered in Earth Sciences. Prospective students seeking graduate programs in geophysics should reach out to CERI for details. Our graduate curriculum fosters both scholarly advancement and personal development through rigorous coursework, investigative projects, and career-enhancing experiences. Candidates are supported in exploring graduate research across conventional disciplinary fields as well as interdisciplinary approaches.
The program aims to: (1) develop proficiency in fundamental geophysics concepts that form the foundation for innovative research; (2) provide hands-on experience with data collection, analytical techniques, and effective communication of findings; (3) prepare graduates for professional careers in geophysics or advanced doctoral studies. Welcome to our Earth Sciences Department. Established in 2002 within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Memphis' main campus, our department boasts 14 dedicated faculty members spanning Archaeology, Geography, and Geology. We prioritize individualized excellence through cooperative, cross-disciplinary Earth Science education and investigation. Both instructors and learners enjoy the freedom to explore unconventional and creative academic pursuits that might be constrained in more conventional departments. The department maintains strong collaborations with several campus entities: the Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI), the Center for Applied Earth Science and Engineering Research (CAESER), Chucalissa Museum, and the Confucius Institute (CIUM). Our Archaeology faculty share academic interests with other archaeology-focused programs throughout the University of Memphis.
