Biomedical Engineering is a diverse discipline that applies engineering concepts to enhance healthcare. This includes creating innovative implants for hip fracture patients, developing devices to monitor electrical signals for cardiac issues, and researching pharmaceutical treatments for cancer and other diseases—all potential career paths for BME graduates. Our graduate program is a partnership with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). We provide three advanced degrees in BME: an MS with a project option, an MS with a thesis option, and a PhD requiring a dissertation. Students can specialize in fields like Biosensors, Biomechanics, Bioelectricity, or Biomaterials. The Department of Biomedical Engineering aims "to train students in Biomedical Engineering, equipping them for immediate careers bridging life sciences and engineering while fostering long-term professional growth in industry, academia, and community service."
The University of Memphis (UofM) and University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) collaborate on a Joint Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering, offering both thesis and non-thesis M.S. degrees as well as Ph.D. degrees. This joint initiative leverages UofM's engineering and scientific resources alongside UTHSC's medical and clinical expertise. All graduate students in biomedical engineering enroll in the Joint Program, earning degrees conferred by both institutions.
Baccalaureate Degree: The applicant must provide an official transcript showing that a bachelor’s degree was awarded by an accredited college or university. If you are a UofM undergraduate student applying to Graduate School at UofM, you do not need to request that an official transcript be sent to Graduate Admissions. This office has access to your transcript. In addition, transcripts from any other college or university attended may be requested. Only transcripts received directly from an issuing institution are considered official. Personal copies are not acceptable as official documents.
GPA: The applicant must have earned an acceptable grade point average, typically a minimum of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0, but departments may make exceptions for students whose overall GPA does not adequately reflect their ability to succeed in their chosen field.
