Our doctoral program in historical musicology follows a traditional structure designed to equip students for advanced music research. The curriculum includes a secondary concentration in a humanities discipline beyond music and concludes with a dissertation. Faculty expertise spans diverse areas including Renaissance music (with emphasis on Spanish traditions), 18th-century compositions (particularly from German-speaking regions), convent music, 19th-century American music, instrument studies, and performance traditions across eras. Recent seminar topics have included the Las Huelgas manuscript, Cristóbal de Morales' works, musical life in 18th-century Vienna, musical rhetoric during the 16th-17th centuries, and Mozart's operatic works. Additionally, we provide a specialized Ph.D. track in Southern Regional Studies, blending historical and ethnomusicological approaches for students focused on the folk traditions of the American South. Recent doctoral research has examined Memphis studio musicians, blues adaptations, the Blackwell Brothers, fiddler Melvin Wine, and rhythm and blues composition techniques.
