The Geophysics specialization within the Earth Sciences PhD program is based at the Center for Earthquake Research and Information. The program aims to: (1) develop comprehensive understanding of geophysical principles and specialized expertise in a selected geophysics subfield; (2) provide training in designing and executing independent research initiatives; (3) offer hands-on experience with data collection, analytical techniques, and effectively communicating findings; (4) prepare graduates for competitive geophysics careers. At the graduate level, Geography offers an M.A. while Earth Sciences confers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Prospective geophysics graduate students should reach out to CERI for details. Our program fosters student development through rigorous academics, research projects, and career preparation initiatives. We support graduate research across traditional disciplines and interdisciplinary approaches. The doctoral program equips students for research careers by building expertise in geography, geology, or geophysics fundamentals while guiding them through original dissertation work. Required examinations validate students' mastery of their chosen specialization. Each student's curriculum is tailored to their academic background and dissertation focus while maintaining broad Earth Sciences competency.
