The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geology program prepares candidates with in-depth expertise in their specialization and rigorous research training. Awarding the degree depends on the candidate's comprehensive understanding of a wide academic discipline and proven capacity to conduct and present independent research. Candidates must also demonstrate clear, persuasive communication skills both verbally and in writing. While coursework, residency, and technical requirements are mandatory, they alone do not qualify for the degree.
Graduates of this program gain these competencies: communicating the relevance and constraints of geological data to stakeholders in land management, environmental conservation, and infrastructure projects; innovating risk assessment techniques for geological hazards and resource evaluation; interpreting subsurface data to guide drilling and excavation choices; planning and conducting field research to address geoscientific challenges; drawing accurate conclusions about Earth's systems from imperfect geological data; integrating geological and geophysical information to create enhanced predictive models; presenting technical findings clearly to diverse audiences; producing well-reasoned, professionally written reports grounded in geological theory; utilizing industry-standard software for data analysis and collaborating on its enhancement; operating sophisticated field and lab equipment; rigorously testing geological hypotheses with advanced methodologies; advancing scientific approaches to uncertainty in geological research; exemplifying professional ethics and assuming leadership in geological organizations; and upholding integrity when balancing public, client, and scientific interests in geological studies.
