Students explore diverse painting techniques and concepts designed to foster personal artistic growth. Those pursuing undergraduate studies in painting must also enroll in courses across other fine arts disciplines. As modern art often blends multiple mediums, painting students frequently produce pieces integrating collage, photography, drawing, sculpture, digital art, and installation work.
Formal acceptance into an art concentration is required for all majors. Simply completing university admission and foundational art classes doesn't ensure placement in a specific concentration. Selection is competitive, relying on portfolio assessments that demonstrate professional quality and meet program standards. Available space may influence acceptance decisions. The portfolio review takes place after finishing foundation courses (ART 1210, ART 1215, ART 1311, ART 1314) plus three introductory-level classes. Concentration application materials and guidelines can be obtained from the department office or faculty advisors. Students are encouraged to consult with advisors before or while preparing their portfolios. Transfer applicants must satisfy the same entry criteria. Following evaluation, students receive one of three outcomes: (1) acceptance, (2) suggestions for improvement with an option to resubmit, or (3) rejection.
All students, both freshmen and transfer, must apply online for admission as an undergraduate student.
Applicants should upload a copy of their unofficial international transcript or marks sheet (high school/secondary or college/university) using our secure document upload system.
All international transfer applicants must have their international documents evaluated by a US credentialing agency that holds membership with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
