Public relations serves as a strategic management role, specializing in media communication via press releases, editorial materials, and promotional efforts. This field emphasizes reciprocal, value-driven interactions between organizations and their audiences. Our program enables students to tackle actual communication challenges for community partners. For instance, seniors developed a spirit-boosting PR initiative for University of Memphis football to increase student game attendance and assisted Habitat for Humanity in establishing a young professionals network. The PR curriculum offers numerous hands-on learning avenues. Undergraduates complete internships with major Memphis institutions including St. Jude and FedEx, or gain agency experience at firms such as Archer Malmo and Obsidian PR. Additional involvement opportunities include the Public Relations Student Society of America and Meeman 901 Strategies, our student-operated communications agency, which fosters professional connections.
The PR program provides extensive practical engagement possibilities. Participants intern with prominent local entities like St. Jude and FedEx, or secure positions at marketing agencies including Archer Malmo and Obsidian PR. Many students join the Public Relations Student Society of America or participate in Meeman 901 Strategies, our student-led communications consultancy, to build industry networks and professional relationships.
