The Multidisciplinary Studies program offers both Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree options, tailored to each student's customized curriculum. This major is open to students maintaining a minimum 2.5 GPA who seek to explore specialized subjects not covered by traditional degree programs. Through Multidisciplinary Studies (MDS), learners can integrate courses from two or three academic fields to craft a personalized major, developed with guidance from a faculty mentor and the MDS program director. The curriculum design offers significant flexibility, permitting the inclusion of courses, studio work, and lab sessions from across all university colleges, provided at least one primary discipline comes from Arts and Sciences. Past MDS students have focused on interdisciplinary combinations such as Communications/Photography, Environmental Studies, Society and Aging, and Sociobiology.
This program serves students with prior college experience, requiring at least one completed semester before enrollment - first-year students are ineligible. Transfer students must complete 15 credits at UMass Dartmouth before applying. Early planning allows for optimal course scheduling, while senior-level major changes are typically not feasible. Note: Students cannot pursue MDS as part of a double major.
