The BS/MS program enables exceptional civil and environmental engineering undergraduates to earn both degrees with a reduced credit requirement compared to pursuing them individually. Selection of students occurs in the spring term of their junior year.
Requirements
A total of 30 credits must be earned. Participants in the 5-year BS/MS program may apply up to 9 credits at the 400 or 500-level toward both degrees. Of these 9 credits, a maximum of 6 can come from CEN 400-level technical elective courses (excluding core technical electives). Courses counted for both degrees must align with the student's submitted Program of Study, which requires approval from the Graduate Advisor and Graduate Program Director. A grade of B or higher is necessary for 400-level courses to qualify for the MS degree, while all graduate courses (500 level or above) must be completed with a grade of C or better to count toward the degree.
Thesis Track
Completion of six (6) credits in MS Graduate Thesis (CEN 590) is mandatory. This includes producing a master's thesis and delivering a satisfactory oral presentation and defense. Additionally, no more than 6 credits from individual study (such as independent or directed study, but not including graduate thesis) can be applied toward the master's degree.
Project Track
Three (3) credits of MS Graduate Project (CEN 592) must be completed. This involves submitting a written report and giving a satisfactory oral presentation and defense of the project. Similarly, no more than 6 credits from individual study (including independent or directed study, excluding graduate project) may count toward the master's degree.
