UMass Boston's Vision Studies MEd program has been recognized among the top online graduate education programs by U.S. News & World Report. This specialized program equips professionals with the skills to support individuals with visual impairments in reaching their objectives, such as accessing excellent education, securing meaningful employment, and navigating independently. Tailored for educators and specialists, it prepares them to empower visually impaired individuals toward safety, productivity, and self-sufficiency.
Engage with innovative educational technologies and acquire real-world experience through practical fieldwork. These competencies can be applied across diverse environments—from school systems and veteran rehabilitation centers to nonprofit organizations and government agencies. The curriculum qualifies graduates for Massachusetts teaching licensure and readies them for national certification exams administered by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals.
Students can choose from four specialized pathways: Orientation & Mobility (O&M), Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI), Vision Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT), and Assistive Technology for Visual Impairment (AT).
The VRT concentration focuses on improving career prospects, independent living, and educational growth for those with vision loss. Participants will master techniques for assessing and instructing daily living skills that promote autonomy for visually impaired individuals. This track meets the standards set by the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired and qualifies graduates for ACVREP's national certification examination.
