UMass Boston's Vision Studies MEd program earned recognition from U.S. News & World Report as a top online graduate education program. This specialized curriculum prepares educators and professionals to support individuals with visual impairments in reaching their aspirations, whether in academics, careers, or independent mobility. Ideal for teachers and service providers, the program equips participants with skills to empower visually impaired individuals toward safety, self-sufficiency, and meaningful livelihoods.
Engage with innovative educational technologies and acquire real-world experience through supervised fieldwork. These competencies can be applied across diverse environments - from school systems and veteran rehabilitation centers to nonprofit organizations and government agencies. Graduates qualify for Massachusetts teaching licensure and are prepared for national certification exams administered by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals.
The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) concentration develops expertise in serving blind or low-vision students and their support networks. Participants include mainstream educators, special education professionals, and related service providers. The curriculum incorporates a practicum component that counts toward Massachusetts DESE's initial licensure requirements.
