The English MA Program at UMass Boston stands as one of the university's most extensive graduate offerings in the liberal arts. Our community of students and faculty collectively explores the rich imaginative realms crafted through literature—worlds shaped by novelists, professional authors, analytical readers, and philosophical minds. The program provides adaptable study paths with four specialized tracks: literature, composition, pedagogy, and creative writing. Learners can design a customized curriculum drawing from any or all of these disciplines.
Our English MA Program distinguishes itself through these key attributes:
Forward-Thinking: Engage with pioneering courses (including our rare books workshop at Boston archives), distinctive extracurricular opportunities (like our Literary Theory Reading Group), and practical assistantship roles (such as graduate teaching and research positions).
Timely & Established: Explore seminar subjects that bridge contemporary developments with enduring scholarly traditions. Current offerings span young adult fiction, historical book studies, graphic narratives, autobiographical writing, digital discourse, Harlem Renaissance studies, multimedia composition, environmental criticism, Arthurian lore, speculative fiction, and Shakespearean theater.
Rigorously Engaging: The curriculum develops sophisticated skills in textual analysis, academic writing, investigative research, and pedagogical approaches. Through seminars, workshops, research projects, and teaching practice, students gain the expertise to complete an original capstone project.
