Discover how to support young adults with disabilities in achieving greater independence while building advocacy skills to shape disability policies at state and national levels.
UMass Boston's Transition Leadership Certificate program addresses the critical shift from high school to adulthood for youth with diverse disabilities. Ideal for educators and professionals holding a master's in Rehabilitation Counseling, School Guidance, School Adjustment Counseling, or related fields—as well as those pursuing initial licensure for special populations—this program equips participants to enhance employment readiness, college preparation, and independent living skills for students with disabilities aged 14-22. You'll also develop leadership capabilities to impact transition-related policies. Graduates emerge ready to thrive as transition specialists, securing roles in secondary schools, transition programs, and college support services for students with disabilities.
Recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children's Division of Career Development and Transition, UMass Boston's program meets accreditation standards for transition specialist training. It also qualifies graduates for Massachusetts' Transition Specialist Endorsement. Successful completion makes candidates eligible for national DCDT certification, while Massachusetts participants may additionally apply for the state's DESE Transition Specialist Endorsement.
