Become a dedicated professional delivering psychological and educational support to children, teens, and families within school environments.
UMass Boston's School Psychology Program equips professionals focused on youth, families, and the learning process. Our training principles are rooted in valuing every individual's dignity while embracing and addressing human diversity. The curriculum blends developmental theory and research with practical, research-backed intervention methods for school-based psychological services. A core objective of the program is cultivating the mindset needed for professional decision-making and continuous growth. Aligned with the College of Education and Human Development's vision, the program champions social justice and inclusive practices.
UMass Boston's School Psychology Program aims to develop practitioners capable of delivering comprehensive psychological and educational support to youth and families through school-based interdisciplinary teams. School psychologists fulfill diverse responsibilities—serving as evaluators, advisors, counselors, administrators, researchers, program developers, staff trainers, mental health advocates, and community liaisons. Our competency-driven program employs a problem-solving framework to prepare students for these multifaceted roles. Taking a comprehensive perspective, the training examines biological, neuropsychological, personal, familial, educational, and cultural influences. Students gain skills to assess and intervene at both individual and systemic levels (family, school, community), while learning to collaborate across disciplines and integrate varied professional viewpoints.
