Computational Science focuses on developing mathematical models to address challenges across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This involves creating and applying numerical, probabilistic, and statistical approaches, along with machine learning techniques and computer science theory. The field inherently bridges multiple disciplines.

For instance, topological data analysis—originating from algebraic topology in pure mathematics—can examine protein structures or massive datasets. Additional applications range from environmental modeling through image analysis to financial risk assessment using stochastic simulations, which also aids computational biology in studying non-coding RNA's impact on cancer.

UMass Boston's Computational Sciences PhD Program fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers and graduate students. It brings together faculty and students from diverse departments within the College of Sciences and Mathematics, including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, and Mathematics. The program leverages existing academic-industry partnerships, preparing graduates for careers in academia or data-driven industries requiring advanced computational modeling skills.
