Scenic design serves as our invitation into the narrative, setting the stage for what's to come. The Scenic Design & Technology program offers an immersive three-year experience centered around practical learning through designing and executing mainstage productions that double as educational workshops. You'll navigate a challenging curriculum covering both core principles and specialized topics in design and technology, with much of your work tied to our mainstage productions - providing ample space for creative exploration, risk-taking, and artistic development.

With intentionally small class sizes, you'll benefit from individualized guidance by industry professionals and the flexibility to tailor your studies, whether your passion lies in scenic conception or technical execution. For those with diverse interests, we sometimes accommodate dual design focuses (such as combining scenery and costumes), contingent upon your background and skills.

Teamwork forms the foundation of our program. Through production roles and Teaching Assistantships, you'll engage with every mainstage show in capacities spanning from conceptual design and technical supervision to prop creation and set painting. Scenic shop TAs typically dedicate about 20 weekly hours to demanding projects involving technical planning, production coordination, and cutting-edge construction methods. Every participant receives personalized coaching in technological applications that enhance their design vision. Over three years, you'll contribute to twelve productions, typically culminating in at least three fully realized mainstage designs for your professional portfolio upon graduation.

Qualification Requirements

All of the materials can be submitted online.

Required of all MFA program areas:

The main Graduate School application, including Personal Statement.
Transcripts of all previous academic work
Resume of relevant professional experience
At least two letters of recommendation (you may submit three)
NOTE: We do not require the GREs for admission to any of our MFA programs.
An applicant's undergraduate degree need not be in Theater, but previous training and experience should be comparable to that required for the Bachelor of Arts in Theater at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Applicants with incomplete backgrounds in theater who show exceptional artistic promise may be admitted provisionally.
Scenic Design also requires:
A portfolio in a format of your choosing. The portfolio may include set design or other sketches, evidence of drawing/painting experience, images of realized and unrealized projects, models or props that you have built, hand or computer drafting samples, or samples of graphic or other applied arts. Descriptive accounts of each item in the portfolio should be included. We are interested in seeing how you can express yourself visually, and what your process looks like. Do not obsess over the graphic design aspect of your portfolio. As long as all images are labelled clearly to provide a sense of context, we are most interested in seeing how you express yourself visually, what your process looks like, and what manual skills you have.
