The East Asian Languages and Cultures program, housed within UMass Amherst's Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, provides a Master of Arts degree in Chinese. Our curriculum emphasizes two key areas: first, the exploration of Chinese literature, culture, linguistics, and teaching methodologies; and second, developing practical language proficiency for careers in translation, interpretation, education, media, business, or public service. Graduates of our MA program have pursued diverse career paths including diplomatic services, government positions, secondary and higher education teaching roles, as well as professional translation and interpretation work.

Qualification Requirements

Prior to their anticipated start date, applicants must complete a bachelor's degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association, or complete an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.
