The Master of Arts in Art Education provides a well-rounded foundation as an artist, educator, and scholar through two distinct pathways: the open track and the initial teacher licensure track.
The open track offers in-depth exploration of art education theory, studio practice, and art historical analysis, focusing on evaluating research, curricula, and professional approaches across schools, museums, and community programs. Students undertake a significant independent research project addressing current issues in art education.
The initial licensure track equips aspiring educators to obtain Massachusetts visual arts teaching certification for pre-K through 12th grade. This path includes core courses in artistic development, material studies, cultural diversity, and social justice, supplemented by advanced electives in studio art, art history, and education. Participants complete pre-practicum fieldwork followed by a full semester of student teaching with accompanying seminars. Like the open track, students develop a substantial independent research project focused on art curriculum or teaching methods.
