This program allows students to earn both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering within five years. The BSMS degrees provided are the same as the separate BS and MS degrees awarded by the MIE Department. By pursuing this combined five-year path, students can complete both degrees faster than if taken separately, potentially increasing their starting salary upon employment. The 4+1 year BSMS program in Mechanical Engineering is available to all UMass Amherst undergraduates majoring in mechanical or industrial engineering, as well as students in related fields like other engineering disciplines, physics, mathematics, kinesiology, and more.
