The undergraduate Art Education program cultivates thoughtful and well-informed visual arts educators who become dynamic and motivational teachers across various learning environments. Graduates earning their BFA in Art Education qualify for Massachusetts Initial Licensure to teach Visual Arts at both elementary and secondary school levels.
This comprehensive program combines rigorous study in studio art, art history, art education, and general education. It enables students to refine their artistic techniques, deepen their knowledge of art across time periods, and adopt reflective, cooperative teaching methods. Hands-on field experiences form a core part of the curriculum, with senior-year student teaching placements in both elementary and secondary schools.
Prospective BFA candidates are advised to start Art Education classes during their sophomore year or early junior year. The program holds accreditation from both the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.
