The Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in Music Education equips students with the necessary expertise to teach music effectively in elementary through high school settings (an audition is required for admission). This program awards a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree specializing in music instruction. Graduates meet the preliminary academic criteria for California's Single Subject Teaching Credential in Music, as the department's curriculum holds full accreditation from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
The coursework offers a well-rounded foundation in music pedagogy, incorporating training in ear training, music theory, creative improvisation, educational technology, conducting techniques, music history, global musical traditions, and specialized methods for choral, general, and instrumental instruction. Students gain practical experience through classroom observations, fieldwork, ensemble participation, and private instruction, learning alongside performance majors under the same faculty.
CSUN's Music department fosters strong partnerships with local schools, enabling education majors to begin observing and assisting in classrooms well before their formal student teaching begins. These collaborations provide access to both urban and suburban educational environments, with experienced mentor teachers available to guide candidates during their credential program placements.
