Students majoring in Russian, Eurasian, and Polish studies gain comprehensive understanding of the region's cultural and historical background, preparing them for professional paths in diplomacy, public service, global development, commerce, policy analysis, or linguistic interpretation. The program requires completion of 14 courses offered at UMass and across the Five College consortium. Whether you're starting from scratch, have intermediate proficiency, or are a heritage speaker, the Russian language program accommodates all levels. Students may also fulfill requirements by studying other Slavic, Eastern European, or Central Asian languages. In addition to language coursework, the curriculum includes six interdisciplinary courses spanning at least three fields such as anthropology, comparative literature, economics, English, history, Judaic studies, political science, sociology, or Russian studies. Through UMass's Russian language, history, and culture program, students develop advanced comprehension of modern Russian in both written and spoken forms, enabling them to analyze texts and concepts across various academic disciplines, conduct research using primary and secondary materials, and produce innovative perspectives by applying their linguistic competence and analytical abilities.
