Studying philosophy isn't merely career training—it's life preparation. Through critical analysis, inquiry, contemplation, and comprehension, philosophy fosters deep self-awareness in students. At UMass, you'll explore philosophy's full spectrum, from classical to modern thought. This encompasses logic, value theory (covering ethics, sociopolitical philosophy, and gender studies), metaphysics (examining existence), epistemology (investigating knowledge), philosophy of mind, and philosophy of language. The major requires at least 10 courses, with mandatory classes in logic, value theory, ancient/medieval philosophy history, 17th-18th century philosophy history, plus two metaphysics/epistemology courses. Alternatively, you can pursue a combined linguistics-philosophy degree. Graduates develop crucial abilities: problem-solving, effective communication, idea organization, balanced evaluation, and simplifying complex information. Alumni enter diverse fields including business, finance, government, legal professions, criminal justice, public relations, technology, healthcare, publishing, and education.
