The UMD IO Psychology Master's program equips students with a thorough grounding in industrial-organizational psychology while emphasizing the integration of statistical knowledge and business acumen. Beyond core IO topics like Selection, Training, Organizational Development, and Performance Management, our curriculum prepares practitioners to effectively interpret and communicate statistical insights. IO MPS candidates master foundational and advanced analytical methods—including Correlations, Regressions, Factor Analysis, and Social Network Analysis—while developing the ability to translate these findings into actionable business strategies. While IO is often associated with HR or analytics departments, our program explores its intersections with critical business functions like Marketing, Finance, and Operations, demonstrating the multifaceted value IO professionals bring to organizations.
Our approach extends beyond theoretical knowledge. While maintaining rigorous academic standards, we train students to adapt research and theory to solve complex, real-world organizational challenges. Every course combines traditional IO principles with practical applications, achieved through case studies, organizational problem-solving exercises, and insights from active practitioners. The program delivers comprehensive training in psychological science while specializing in IO research and implementation, teaching innovative methods to enhance both workforce well-being and organizational performance. Graduates pursue diverse career paths as in-house IO specialists, consultants, or leaders in government and nonprofit sectors.
The IO MPS program blends academic excellence with practical experience and professional mentorship, designed for both full-time students and working professionals. This intensive 15-month program spans five terms, with students taking two courses per term to complete their degree efficiently.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
