The Master of Journalism is a 30-37 credit program without a thesis requirement, tailored for aspiring professional journalists. The exact credit count varies based on students' background and potential participation in an extended semester collaborating with the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism. Graduating M.J. students present their journalistic work to a faculty and industry professional review panel. Those focusing on broadcast journalism will graduate fully equipped for careers as news reporters. The program offers elective options including studio production, investigative reporting, sports journalism, and more. Multiplatform journalism students can specialize in data journalism, visual storytelling, audience engagement, or combine studies across various disciplines.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
