The Special Education Program equips future educators through comprehensive undergraduate and graduate training, while also developing researchers, teacher educators, and leaders at the doctoral level. Ranked #11 by U.S. News & World Report (2015), the EDSP program offers two full-time bachelor's degree tracks: Elementary/Middle Special Education and Early Childhood/Early Childhood Special Education. At the master's level, candidates can pursue two distinct certification pathways. Each program prepares educators to address the challenging demands of teaching students with both high and low incidence disabilities. Graduates qualify for Maryland special education certification, with reciprocity across 49 states. All programs meet Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) standards and hold Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) accreditation.
EDSP students benefit from exceptional academic training that combines scholarly rigor with practical experience in a diverse learning environment. The university's location in Maryland near Washington, DC offers unique advantages, including access to Congressional offices, advocacy groups, and federal agencies like the US Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). Local schools throughout Maryland provide hands-on experience with culturally and linguistically diverse student populations across urban, suburban, and rural educational settings.
For the M.Ed. programs, students must submit scores on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators test (meeting the State of Maryland passing scores) prior to admission into the program and have an undergraduate 3.0 GPA.
A TOEFL score of 100 is required for international students who are not native speakers of English.
