The dual degree program merges curriculum from Historic Preservation and Urban Studies and Planning, allowing students to earn both a Master of Historic Preservation and Master of Community Planning with reduced credit requirements compared to pursuing each degree independently. This program equips graduates to excel where planning and preservation intersect—fields that have historically been closely linked. For instance, Maryland's State Historic Preservation Office, the Maryland Historical Trust, shares its location with the state's planning department. Preservation is also integrated into planning departments in Baltimore City and counties like Prince George's and Montgomery. Alumni of this program gain the flexibility to work in either field (a valuable asset during economic downturns) while uniquely contributing their expertise to preservation planning challenges in communities statewide and nationwide.
