The Department of Germanic Studies' German Program provides graduate education culminating in M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Its primary emphasis lies in Contemporary German Studies, blending traditional discipline-specific coursework with interdisciplinary approaches. These degree programs center on German-speaking societies from the Enlightenment era through modern times, examining diverse cultural expressions including literary works, non-literary texts, and various forms of cultural production. The curriculum embodies the evolving nature of German studies, moving beyond conventional language and literature studies to incorporate cultural studies perspectives such as gender theory, cinema studies, and postcolonial analysis.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
