The University of Maryland's Counseling Psychology (COUN) Program is jointly managed by the Department of Psychology and the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education. Established as one of the country's pioneering counseling psychology programs, it has maintained uninterrupted accreditation from the American Psychological Association since 1953. For the last thirty years, national rankings have consistently placed our program among the elite counseling psychology programs nationwide. Our diverse faculty pursue research across multiple domains, encompassing psychotherapy effectiveness studies, cross-cultural psychology, career development, health psychology, and equity-focused initiatives.
Applicants' undergraduate programs should ordinarily include at least 15 semester hours of coursework in behavioral science fields (e.g., anthropology, education, psychology, sociology, statistics).
