AMO scientists investigate some of physics' most dynamic and cutting-edge domains. Key focus areas include: laser cooling and trapping techniques, quantum optical phenomena, atom optics, ultracold atomic interactions, ultracold plasma systems, quantum information processing, quantum computing with trapped ions, and quantum-degenerate matter. Breakthroughs in these fields have created numerous research opportunities, making AMO physics one of the fastest-growing disciplines. The University of Maryland's Physics Department ranks among the nation's largest, with faculty and students collaborating across over 30 physics specialties on groundbreaking research. Combining demanding academic programs with our strategic Washington D.C. proximity, this vibrant research environment creates an exceptional learning experience. Our undergraduate students gain admission to top graduate programs and competitive positions, while graduate alumni pursue rewarding careers in government, industry, and academic institutions.

The University of Maryland Department of Physics has a strong national and international reputation, and receives a large number of applications each year from well-qualified students. Consequently, admission to the graduate degree program is quite selective.Students who enter the graduate program are normally expected to have strong backgrounds in physics, including intermediate-level courses in mechanics, electricity and magnetism, physical optics, quantum physics, and thermodynamics. Prior research experience and strong letters of recommendation are highly valued. Good preparation in mathematics is also desirable, especially for students who may pursue theoretical physics research.
