The Department of Philosophy provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, focusing on modern Anglo-American philosophy and its interdisciplinary connections. While many doctoral candidates begin without an M.A., they can obtain one while progressing toward their Ph.D. The Ph.D. track primarily prepares students for academic careers in teaching and research, whereas the M.A. program serves those seeking to enhance their undergraduate knowledge or apply philosophical expertise to other professions. Both terminal M.A. and Ph.D. degrees are available. Faculty expertise spans contemporary analytic philosophy, with particular emphasis on: Aesthetics, Ethics and Political Philosophy, Philosophical Logic, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, and Philosophy of Science
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
