The graduate program in the Computer Science Department ranks as one of the nation's best and within the top ten public institutions. Students can pursue both M.S. and Ph.D degrees, with nearly all full-time candidates receiving financial support through assistantships, fellowships, or grants. The Department excels in research across multiple fields, including artificial intelligence, computer systems and networking, database systems, programming languages, software engineering, scientific computing, algorithms and computation theory, computer vision, geometric computing, graphics, human-computer interaction, and bioinformatics.

As a leader in computer vision research, the University of Maryland hosts one of the country's oldest and most extensive programs. Established in 1964 by computer vision pioneer Azriel Rosenfeld, the Center for Automation Research (CFAR) continues to foster a vibrant community with nearly a dozen faculty members and approximately fifty graduate students. UMD's research spans all facets of computer vision, covering topics like Face Recognition, Vision for Robotics, 3D Reconstruction, Image Segmentation, and Visual Classification. Many projects leverage Big Data and Deep Learning techniques. This work is highly interdisciplinary, involving students and faculty from Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Applied Mathematics, while collaborating closely with areas such as Human-Computer Interaction, Machine Learning, Computer Graphics, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Robotics, and Optimization.
