The Department of Art History and Archaeology provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Art History. This program focuses on in-depth analysis and academic interpretation of artistic works spanning from prehistoric times to contemporary periods, emphasizing art as a fundamental humanistic expression. Faculty members specialize in all aspects of Western art history along with African, American, and East Asian artistic traditions. The doctoral program enables students to pursue specialized research, gain teaching experience at the undergraduate level, and establish professional networks within the art history community.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
