The Department provides a PhD program in Classics, featuring specializations in Classics (covering ancient history, philology, and literary criticism) and Classical Archaeology. Applicants with a BA who aim to pursue doctoral studies can enter directly into the PhD program or transition from the MA program. The PhD curriculum mandates thirty (30) semester hours of coursework beyond the MA, including a minimum of twelve (12) semester hours at the 6000 level. Both programs involve comprehensive examinations. For Classical Archaeology, requirements include: a reading list exam in Greek or Latin, proof of proficiency in Greek and Roman history (via exam or coursework), assessments on Bronze Age/Greek archaeology and Etruscan/Roman archaeology topics, a specialized field exam, and an interdisciplinary topic examination. PhD candidates must also develop and defend a dissertation that offers an original scholarly contribution.
