The AHMA graduate program in Ancient History and Ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean Archaeology brings together over 20 faculty members from seven Berkeley departments and the Graduate Theological Union. The program is overseen by a chair, graduate adviser, and student affairs officer.
This interdisciplinary program grants PhD degrees focusing on the intersection of archaeology, history, and related ancient studies disciplines. Graduates typically obtain teaching positions in Classics, Art History, History, Anthropology, or Near Eastern Studies departments at institutions worldwide, including universities in Israel, Greece, the UK, Canada, and across the United States.
While the program doesn't admit students solely for an MA, PhD candidates can earn their master's after completing Stage 1 requirements. Through coursework, seminars, and research projects, students collaborate closely with faculty to develop both specialized knowledge and critical thinking skills in their chosen fields.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are:
TOEFL at least 90 for the Internet-based test (IBT), and 570 for the paper-based format (PBT); Overall Band score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale for IELTS.
