The combined Doctor of Medicine and Master of Science (M.D./Ph.D.) program is a dual-degree opportunity provided through the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Prospective students must first gain admission to the School of Medicine's M.D. program and express their intent to pursue the dual degree during the application process. The program follows this structure: two years of medical studies, four years of doctoral research, followed by two final years of medical training. This curriculum aims to cultivate physician-scientists with strong research capabilities. Alumni often pursue careers that blend clinical practice with biomedical engineering research. Upon completion, participants earn both a medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a doctoral degree from the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Admission to the Graduate Program in Bioengineering requires a Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited undergraduate institution. Applicants with degrees in non-engineering disciplines, such as biology, chemistry, physics, or mathematics, are expected to have the following prerequisite courses: Calculus I, II, III; Differential Equations; and Thermodynamics. These courses would ideally have been completed by the time of application, but they may also be in progress.
