The Department of Applied Science is an interdisciplinary graduate program primarily offering a Ph.D., with select opportunities for an M.S. degree. These degrees allow for specialization across various physical and natural science disciplines. Students collaborate with faculty advisors to design personalized academic paths tailored to their career aspirations. The program attracts diverse candidates with varied academic backgrounds and professional objectives. New graduate students engage in coursework, faculty mentorship, peer collaboration, and seminar participation. Each student's course plan is customized in consultation with their faculty advisory committee. The Ph.D. program provides full financial support, including a $27,000 annual Research Assistantship, tuition coverage, and health benefits.
To earn the degree, candidates must complete their approved course sequence, pass a comprehensive qualifying exam demonstrating subject mastery, conduct original research, and successfully defend their dissertation before their advisory committee in a public oral examination.
