The Department of Mechanical Engineering hosts four major interdisciplinary research centers and over 40 specialized laboratories. Faculty and students drive innovation in critical research domains through advancements in nanoscale 3D printing, creation of next-generation health monitoring technologies, and pioneering developments in robotic systems. We transform conceptual designs into practical manufacturing solutions, bridging laboratory discoveries with global applications. The academic program enables students to investigate the full spectrum of this diverse field. With specialized tracks including design and manufacturing, sustainable energy engineering, and robotics (among others), University of Maryland undergraduates immerse themselves in this dynamic discipline to build foundations for careers across multiple sectors. Mechanical Engineering students personalize their educational journey by selecting from six concentration options: Aero/Mechanical Industry, Automotive Design, Design and Manufacturing, Energy and the Environment, Engineering Management, and Robotics and Mechatronics.
