The mathematics program culminates in a Bachelor of Science degree, equipping students with comprehensive training in mathematics and statistics to prepare them for graduate studies, teaching careers, or roles in government and industry sectors. Visit our career opportunities section for more details. Several courses incorporate computer applications alongside mathematical instruction. Given the value of mathematical proficiency across various disciplines, more than one-third of UMCP mathematics students pursue dual majors. The major offers four specialized pathways: the Traditional Track, Secondary Education Track, Statistics Track, and Applied Mathematics Track. Note that students aiming for the Five-Year Integrated Master's with Certification Program must complete the Traditional Track. The Statistics Track caters to those pursuing graduate studies in Statistics or careers demanding robust statistical expertise.
Our Mathematics Department provides majors with extensive exposure to contemporary mathematical concepts while developing their problem-solving skills, application abilities across disciplines, and capacity for constructing precise mathematical proofs. This curriculum readies graduates for advanced mathematical studies, secondary education teaching positions, or professional opportunities in government and corporate settings.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
