The Elementary/Middle Special Education Teacher Preparation Program qualifies graduates for special education certification in Maryland, with recognition across 49 states. This 120-credit, four-year curriculum equips future educators to handle the growing demands of teaching students with disabilities. Candidates will gain skills to instruct learners with both mild (high incidence) and severe (low incidence) disabilities across all classifications. This program specifically trains professionals to support students with disabilities in grades 1-8 while fostering collaboration with families and school staff. The University of Maryland's College of Education offers research-driven, practical programs addressing diverse educational challenges. With departments spanning Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education, Human Development and Quantitative Methodology, and Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership, the College's distinguished faculty, students, and alumni champion equity and social justice. These programs develop future educators, counselors, psychologists, administrators, researchers, and specialists who serve individuals from early childhood through adulthood in schools, community organizations, and higher education institutions.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
