The Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education (Pre-K through 3rd grade) and Early Childhood Special Education (birth to age 8) (EC/ECSE) is a rigorous, interdisciplinary teacher preparation program spanning the Departments of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education, and Human Development and Quantitative Methodology. Designed for aspiring educators of young children with and without disabilities, this UMD program incorporates evidence-based practices grounded in developmental research, learning theories, teaching methods, and disability studies. Beyond addressing the needs of children with identified disabilities, the program uniquely emphasizes training educators to support culturally and linguistically diverse children facing environmental challenges like poverty, immigration status, and other socioeconomic factors. These complex circumstances present additional obstacles in reducing early childhood educational disparities.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
