Agricultural Science and Technology is a science-focused program that equips students with technical skills across diverse agricultural disciplines. Students in this program complete coursework in agronomy, plant science, agricultural economics, animal sciences, environmental science, and pest management. With numerous elective options, both restricted and unrestricted, the curriculum offers flexibility for students to tailor their studies to align with individual interests and career aspirations. The program provides two pathways for pursuing Agricultural & Extension Education: 1) A Double Major Option, or 2) An Integrated Master's Option. This University of Maryland initiative, jointly offered by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the College of Education, prepares graduates to teach agricultural subjects at the secondary level.
Students can choose between two routes to become high school agriculture teachers. The Double Major Option combines Agricultural Science and Technology (AGST) with Secondary Education. Alternatively, the Integrated Master's Option enables students to earn both a B.S. in AGST and an M.A. in Education. Maryland requires all teachers to obtain a Master's degree either before or during their teaching employment. The Integrated Master's pathway involves completing a B.S. in AGST followed by an M.A. in Secondary Education, which qualified students can finish in one year post-bachelor's degree. The program includes a teaching internship during the final undergraduate semester at a Maryland high school with an agricultural program. This accelerated path particularly benefits transfer students or those who decide to pursue teaching later in their undergraduate studies.
