The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) program offers undergraduate students a career-oriented, professional education in music. Students can specialize in composition, jazz, piano, strings, theory, voice, or winds and percussion, learning from distinguished faculty while performing in premier ensembles and engaging with cutting-edge music history and theory courses. About 60% of the curriculum focuses on music, combining rigorous professional training with an institutional emphasis on diversity, community involvement, and entrepreneurial skills. Graduates leave equipped for creative musical careers or admission to elite graduate programs. Though demanding, students often pair the B.M. with another major—many simultaneously complete a Bachelor of Music Education with one additional semester.
Our string department features nationally acclaimed soloists, orchestral performers, and chamber musicians committed to excellence in violin, viola, cello, double bass, and harp instruction. Alongside resident faculty, National Symphony Orchestra artists frequently teach masterclasses. The string faculty, all active chamber musicians, foster collaboration while leveraging the resources of a top-tier research university. Students transfer chamber music's refined skills—nuanced communication, technical precision, interpretive insight, and leadership—to solo and orchestral performance contexts.
