The Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) program prepares undergraduates for careers teaching music in K-12 schools. Our distinguished faculty and focus on educator development make this possible. Through this curriculum, you'll develop as both a skilled performer (B.M.E. students participate in the same lessons and ensembles as performance majors) and a thoughtful educator prepared to teach in diverse settings. The B.M.E. is an intensive program primarily suited for those pursuing music careers. However, students can pursue a dual degree in both music education (B.M.E.) and music performance (B.M.), which requires just one extra semester (totaling four-and-a-half years) as both degrees are completed together. This dual path provides exceptional performance training and may be ideal for students wanting maximum performance experience at the University of Maryland. Dual degree candidates complete eight semesters of classes, private lessons, and ensembles, followed by a ninth semester devoted to full-time student teaching.
Our piano program provides numerous learning and performance experiences that push students to excel. Beyond weekly studio classes, students participate in masterclasses with acclaimed guest artists like Gilbert Kalish, Boris Berman, Richard Goode, Joseph Kalichstein, and Julian Martin. Piano students play a vital role in the School of Music, with frequent chances to collaborate with vocalists, string players, and wind instrumentalists. These collaborations span chamber music, large ensembles, and opera productions.
