The Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) program prepares undergraduates for careers teaching music in K-12 schools. Our graduates enjoy a perfect job placement record, with Maryland schools actively recruiting our alumni. This success stems from our experienced faculty and strong focus on teacher development. Through this program, you'll develop both as a skilled performer (B.M.E. students participate in the same lessons and ensembles as performance majors) and as a thoughtful educator capable of working with diverse student populations. The B.M.E. curriculum is intensive and primarily intended for those pursuing music education exclusively. However, students can pursue a dual degree in both music education (B.M.E.) and music performance (B.M.), which requires just one extra semester (totaling four-and-a-half years) as both degrees are completed together. This dual degree option provides maximum performance opportunities during your studies at the University of Maryland. Dual degree candidates complete eight semesters of classes, private lessons, and ensemble work, followed by a ninth semester devoted entirely to student teaching.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
