The Music Education Division at Hartt provides one of the country's most extensive music education programs. Blending intensive conservatory training with fundamental music education principles, this curriculum equips students for careers teaching music in elementary and secondary schools. Beyond general music instruction, majors study choral techniques, wind and string instrument pedagogy, along with specialized methods including Kod√°ly, Suzuki, and Orff approaches. Undergraduate students follow a four-year program focused on either instrumental or vocal performance, while those interested in jazz (saxophone, trumpet, or trombone) can opt for a dual degree in Music Education and Jazz Studies (a five-year program). Applicants for the dual major must complete both jazz and classical auditions, as they'll receive private lessons in both disciplines.
Hartt's Music Education Division maintains dynamic partnerships with local school districts. At the University of Hartford Magnet School, Hartt students gain hands-on experience teaching younger elementary students in classroom environments and mentoring beginning band and orchestra players through the Hartt Band Project and Hartt String Project. Through collaboration with Simsbury Public Schools, Hartt students instruct upper elementary general music classes along with high school band and choir ensembles. These distinctive partnerships offer valuable practical teaching experience before student teaching placements. Hartt's Music Education alumni are highly recruited for teaching positions in public schools across New England and nationwide.
