The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) program holds accreditation from the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board (LAAB). This degree fulfills the educational prerequisites for professional licensure across all 50 U.S. states. LAAB mandates that first-professional degree programs must cover fundamental landscape architecture competencies: its history, philosophy, theory, ethics, professional practice, planning, design execution, and management. As a site-focused design field, the program also addresses broader regional and environmental challenges. The studio-centered curriculum weaves ecological and social considerations into the design process. Students progress through sequential lecture and studio courses, starting with foundational landscape design concepts and culminating in a capstone research and design project. Course offerings encompass Site Analysis and Ecological Principles, Site Design Studio, Urban Design Studio, and Professional Practice, alongside digital studios that combine CAD, GIS, and visualization tools with traditional design techniques.
Landscape architecture incorporates diverse creative expressions - from earthworks and lighting installations to metalwork, woodcraft, stone masonry, and public art. Skilled designers reveal the aesthetic potential in every landscape element. The program introduces students to various materials and techniques through hands-on learning and case studies like Washington DC's Yards Park and Baltimore's Pierce's Park. Working with living ecosystems and natural weathering processes means creating designs that transform and mature over time, ensuring dynamic, evolving spaces for years to come.
