The Romance Language Major is a collaborative program between the Department of French and Italian and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Designed for students pursuing expertise in multiple Romance languages, this major requires completion of 45 credits across two of three available language tracks: French, Italian, or Spanish. Each language component mandates its first four courses, with potential exceptions requiring advisor approval in coordination with the Romance Language Advisory Committee. To fulfill the 45-credit requirement, students complete 21 credits in each of their two chosen languages plus three additional 400-level credits in either language. Courses in literature or civilization must be taken in their original language, not in translation. Those interested in Teacher's Certification should contact the College of Education for guidance.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
