Founded in 1969, the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice awarded its first doctoral degrees in 1978/79. It has since become one of the university's most sought-after majors, boasting the nation's top-ranked doctoral program according to U.S. News and World Report (2005, 2010, 2019). Expanding beyond the College Park Campus, CCJS now offers undergraduate studies at Shady Grove and a Master's program in China through a partnership with Nanjing Normal University Law School. The department's mission is to serve as a pioneering force in criminology and criminal justice, acting as the University of Maryland's primary resource for research and education concerning crime, delinquency prevention, justice systems, and terrorism. Its objectives include advancing criminological theory and research, preparing graduate students for scholarly work, and delivering exceptional undergraduate education with opportunities for internships and global learning. Faculty members provide expert guidance to government agencies worldwide, helping shape evidence-based policies to address delinquency, crime, and terrorism. Additionally, the department supports the university, local communities, and state through consultation on vital public safety matters.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
