The Classics program at the University of Maryland allows students to explore the rich cultural heritage of ancient Greece and Rome while developing expertise in their histories, languages, religions, political systems, and gender dynamics. Our curriculum focuses on rigorous analysis of Western civilization, helping students sharpen their critical thinking and communication skills—essential abilities for professional success or further academic pursuits. Alumni pursue diverse careers in law, education, healthcare, technology, and public service. The undergraduate program features three concentrations: Classical Humanities, Latin, and a dual Latin-Greek track. Numerous courses satisfy General Education and Core requirements. Students seeking a robust liberal arts foundation without intending to specialize in Classics can select any track, while aspiring Latin educators should pursue the Latin or Latin-Greek options. Those planning graduate studies in Classics, ancient history, or philosophy are advised to choose the Latin-Greek track.
